Rouch & Co" tailboard camera dates from around 1880 and is in "as found condition and has not been repaired or restored by us. Were a camera-maker in London, England, founded in 1863 by "William White Rouch", they were active in the late 19th Century, based in The Strand, London, and trading until 1919.

The camera has a mahogany body with brass fittings, a "Thornton- Pickard patent snap shot shutter" and a "Wray" lens. The camera bears an ivorine name plaque to the top of the camera, with.

E lettering is still clear and legible. The brass lens is embossed with Wray, London, 4 1/4 x 3 1/4., 4 in. The iris opens and closes fine when the lever is moved.

The "Thornton-Pickard" shutter does not appear to be in working order. The level to the top of the camera is dry. There are no major holes or splits to the deep plum coloured leather bellows, that I can find, however, there is some fading to some of the corners and creases, there are also a few very small loss covering to some of the corners. The glass plate has no cracks or chips that I can see and it measures 4 1/4 inches by 3 1/4 inches, which I believe is 1/4 plate size.

The wooden body has gained a lovely depth of colour and patina over the years, it is free from any major splits and cracks, however, the folding bottom section has had a repair to one edge at some point but is still strong and sturdy. The camera also has the usual scuffs, marks and scratches that you would associate with an item of this age. All of the brass hinges, slides etc, appear to be present and are in working order.

The camera locks in to place with two brass slides and it moves along the two teethed rails, however, it doesn't grip as well as it should in places when being wound out, but it does stay in place when fully extended. It folds away as it should, however, there is no catch to hold it together, I have tried to show this in the photographs.
