A Very Fine English Wetplate Camera With a Landscape Lens By G. Please Note - This camera has been re-listed Due to an error in the listing. It's now correct and will run till it finishes. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Offered for sale is an exceptionally fine and original Weplate camera with an unusual combination landscape and portrait lens by G Shepherd, London.

The camera is unsigned but typical of the cameras produced for the English market in about 1860/70. The camera is built of solid mahogany with dovetailed joints and finished with French polish. Each separate joint has a brass screw for added strength. Each screw head is aligned.

The front of the camera is quite simple with no control for lens height adjustment. The back of the camera folds down to form the track like an early form of tailboard. This is then locked into position with a sliding board below. The back of the camera pulls out to focus and is then locked in position with a knurled wheel at the back.

At the back of the camera is the square focal screen with one wetplate dark slide. The camera is focussed using the focal screen then the screen is replaced with the darkslide and the image exposed.

The lens is very unusual. Essentially it's a landscape type lens with an internal aperture and a single non achromatic plano-convex lens at the back. However at some point a separate cell containing two lenses has been made. This assembly simply slides in at the front and and can be easily removed when not required.

This assembly increases the magnification effectively turning the lens into a portrait lens. The lens is engraved: G. Farringdon St, London 5176 The lens has a rack and pinion focus and its original brass lens cap. Condition: Cosmetically the camera is very good.

This camera has not been restored or re-polished in any way. The finish on the wood is totally original. The brass lacquer is a little worn and pitted. There are some holes on the top where a later handle had been attached. This has been removed but holes remain.

The rack and pinion on the lens is good Optically the lenses are good with some minor cleaning marks. Dimensions Plate size - 6.5inch Square Size - Fully extended 16.5 Inches Apsley Antiques Mailing List Please join our mailing list on the left of the page or below.
