Superb Watson of London Mahogany & Brass Half Plate Field Camera
Watson of London, England were one of the finest camera makers of their day, and used by professional and serious amateurs alike. According to "British Camera Makers", Watson started to number their cameras in 1888, and I can find no numbers on this camera. It comes with two plate holders, and a Steinheil Patent lens, which I think is a rare Gruppen Antiplanat, which were first made in 1881. The body of the camera is of fineish mahogany, with small dovetails joints, and brass binding for extra strength and stability. The bellows look like Russian leather and are lacquered. It has been much used, by a professional or enthusiastic amateur, but is in great condition, although the lacquer on the runners where the front struts slide up and down are tarnished. This can be remedied if you wish, as they can be taken off, by carefully unscrewing the retaining screws, but I believe most collectors would prefer to leave as they are.
