Lovely Antique Victorian 5 x 4 inch Plate Mahogany Camera with Lancaster Lens

This is a lovely, fully functional example of a mahogany and brass plate camera from around the 1890s complete with a double dark slide holder and a very nice Lancaster lens. The camera maker's nameplate has come off the side of the camera although the retailer's name plate is still present - it was supplied by the City Photo and Sports Stores at 4B New Broad Street, London.

It is complete and fully functional although I do not have the means to test it, and the lens surfaces are in very good undamaged condition. It does not have a shutter instead the lens has settings referring to the time for which the lens cap should be removed to give the right exposure. The lens assembly has an iris built in which works very well and the brass barrel is nicely marked by the maker, J Lancaster & Son.

The camera has a revolving tripod base but no tripod is included and a double extending bellows which is intact and light proof. A fold in the bellows at the end nearest the lens has been slightly distorted in storage as shown but there is no hole in the bellows. The double book style dark plate holder is a rather unusual size taking plates of 5 x 4 inches and giving an exposure area of 4.75 x 3.75 which is half way between the recognised 1/4 and 1/2 plate sizes.

The hinged back cover has the number 18A embossed but I don't know the significance of this. The camera folds up nicely and the leather carrying handle is intact and the overall size when folded is 7 x 7 x 2.5 inches approximately. The lens assembly has a visible lens diameter of 1.25 inches and a length front to back of 1.5 inches.
