A Rare Gandolfi 3×4 Hand & Stand Camera. Make Gandolfi, London Model The Universal Hand & Stand Date - Circa 1900 Film/Plate Size - 4 x 5 Size - 24cm Long 16cm tall Country of manufacture - UK and Ireland DESCRIPTION Offered for sale is a very rare 3×4 Hand & Stand camera by Gandolfi, London, Circa 1900. The camera has an ivorine label to the side which reads; THE "UNIVERSAL" PATENT GANDOLFI, LONDON This Gandolfi camera is perhaps the best looking of the leather covered hand and stand cameras ever produced.

Unlike any other hand and stand camera of the period all the external brass fittings are finished in bright lacquer work. This really adds to the visual appeal and sets it above all other cameras of this type. The leather work is of very high quality with a fine grained finish and impressed tram lines at all the corners.

The front of the Gandolfi camera is released by pushing a release catch at the front of the flap on the top of the camera body. The front folds down revealing the French polished mahogany interior with all brass work finished in golden lacquer work.

The camera, although compact, is in fact a double extension with one track pulling out and the other racked out using the brass wheel at the side. The front of the camera The camera has all the usual adjustments with the lens board able to rise and fall and be positioned leaning back or forward. The Brass support for the lens board is engraved'Gandolfi's Patent'.

A nice finishing touch seen on most cameras by quality makers is that all the screw heads are aligned in the same direction. The lens fitted to the camera is the original one fitted by Gandolfi. The lens is a Zeiss Protar with a Bausch & Lomb pneumatic shutter. The lens is made up of two elements one engraved'Zeiss Patent 9in'and the other engraved'Zeiss Patent 11 1/2in'two brass scales on the baseboard correspond to both lenses which would have been used as single front elements. When used together they become a 5 3/4in lens. Again there is a brass scale on the baseboard which corresponds to this. Gandolfi, Louis Worked 1885 - 1932 Louis Gandolfi established his camera firm in 1885 having previously worked for Lejune & Perken. As well as making his own range of cameras Gandolfi made extensively for the trade supplying firms such as Waston, Sands & Hunter, etc. Gandolfi also supplied specialist cameras to various Government departments.
